Castro Ouzo 700ML
Castro Ouzo
A masterfully crafted spirit that hails from the fortified village of Agios Georgios Sikousis on the island of Chios. Distilled using traditional copper stills, it is made from a 100% distillate of carefully selected anise, fennel, and the island’s famed Chios natural mastic, along with other aromatic seeds. The result is a spirit rich in flavour and aromas, capturing the authentic taste of Greece.
What sets Ouzo Castro apart is the meticulous process where the essence of the distillate is patiently collected and bottled without any added sugar, preserving its natural integrity. This ouzo also contains natural extracts and essential oils from Chios mastic and anise, which have been studied in collaboration with the Democritus University of Thrace. Research demonstrated the antioxidant potential of these essential oils, showcasing the health benefits of this traditional Greek spirit.
Whether sipped slowly with water or enjoyed alongside a plate of seafood meze, Castro Ouzo offers a smooth and aromatic experience, perfect for any occasion. Its unique combination of fennel, mastic, and anise creates a refreshing balance that pairs beautifully with olives, cheeses, and grilled delicacies.
Pairing Ideas for Castro Ouzo:
Seafood: The fresh, briny flavours of grilled octopus, calamari, or shrimp perfectly complement the herbaceous and aromatic qualities of Castro Ouzo. Its anise and mastic notes pair beautifully with the natural sweetness of seafood.
Meze: Serve Castro Ouzo with a traditional spread of Greek meze like olives, feta cheese, dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), and tzatziki. The sharpness of feta and the richness of olive oil balance well with the spirit's complex, herbaceous profile.
Grilled Meats: The liquorice-like flavour of anise in the ouzo complements smoky grilled lamb, pork souvlaki, or spicy sausages. The robust and hearty nature of grilled meats enhances the bold flavour of Castro Ouzo.
Citrus Salads: The refreshing zing of a citrus-based salad (with oranges or lemons) helps to highlight the natural mastic and fennel flavours in Castro Ouzo. Add some fresh herbs like mint or dill to make the pairing even more vibrant.
Cheese Platters: Pair Castro Ouzo with mild, creamy cheeses like manouri or kefalotyri. The anise notes offer a nice contrast to the salty and rich flavours of Greek cheeses.
Desserts: For a sweet pairing, consider pairing Castro Ouzo with Greek desserts like loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts) or baklava. The sweetness of these treats enhances the fragrant and slightly sweet undertones of the ouzo.
This versatile spirit shines when enjoyed alongside both savoury and sweet Greek cuisine, making it a delightful companion for a variety of dishes.

About the brand:
The Hahalis family, owners of the Castro Distillery, has deep roots in Chios, the island famous for its production of mastic. Originally established in the 19th century, the business moved to Patras in 1939, where it eventually flourished. The family distillery is known for preserving traditional methods of extraction and distillation, producing premium spirits like Tentoura—a liqueur native to Patras made from cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
In the 1990s, the distillery moved to a modern facility in the Romanos region near Patras, benefiting from the area's high-quality water and optimal environmental conditions for aging spirits. Today, Castro Distillery remains a leading name in Greek spirits, blending tradition with innovation, such as collaborations with universities for product development and sustainability projects.
