Thoos PGI Assyrtiko X Preknadi 750ml

$75

Domaine Dalamara’s Thoos

A distinctive dry white wine from Naoussa, Greece, crafted from a thoughtful blend of Assyrtiko and the rare local variety Preknadi. This pairing highlights the vibrant acidity and mineral drive of Assyrtiko alongside the softer, aromatic charm of Preknadi, resulting in a wine that is both refreshing and deeply tied to the region’s heritage.

Preknadi also known as Priknadi, Prekna, and Prekniariko is a lesser-known indigenous grape historically grown in Naoussa. Nearly lost after the phylloxera outbreak of the 1960s, it has been lovingly revived in recent years by winemakers like Dalamara. Its name comes from the Greek word Prekniaris, meaning freckle-face, a playful reference to the grape’s speckled skin. Preknadi wines are typically aromatic, with flavours of peach and apricot, and offer moderate acidity, making it an ideal partner to the structure and tension of Assyrtiko.

The 2023 vintage presents a pale lemon hue with greenish reflections. On the nose, it delivers citrus peel, herbs, and delicate floral notes, while the palate reveals layers of peach, lemon, and crisp apple. Lively acidity and a medium body lead into a refreshing, lemony finish that lingers gracefully.

Thoos, meaning swift in Greek perfectly captures the wine’s energy and elegance. It is a versatile companion at the table, enjoyable both on its own and paired with food.

About the Winery

Domaine Dalamara is a historic, family-owned winery situated at the entrance of Naoussa in northern Greece’s Central region. Established in 1840 by Ioannis Georgiou Dalamara, the estate has been integral to the region’s viticultural heritage for over 180 years, producing wines that reflect both tradition and innovation. Today, it is led by sixth-generation winemaker Kostis Dalamara, who carries forward the family legacy while infusing it with international expertise gained from Burgundy, Alsace, and Catalonia. His vision balances respect for heritage with a modern approach that continues to place the estate among the most respected in Naoussa.

Vineyard and Winemaking Practices

The estate’s vineyards span approximately 6 hectares on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermio, a location prized for its altitude, cool breezes, and rich soils that create ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The Dalamara family has cultivated their vines organically since 1996 and has incorporated biodynamic practices since 2008, treating the land as a living ecosystem.

The primary grape is Xinomavro, Naoussa’s noble variety, celebrated for its high acidity, firm tannins, and remarkable ability to age. From this grape, the winery crafts wines that are both powerful and elegant, often compared to the Nebbiolos of Piedmont. Kostis employs a philosophy of minimal intervention: fermentations with native yeasts, gentle extraction, and no fining or filtration. His judicious use of oak ensures that the wines remain authentic expressions of terroir, bringing out the complexity and depth of Naoussa’s soils and climate.
