Greek Cooking in an Australian Kitchen by Rena Mihalopoulos

A celebration of Greek food, culture, and the art of living well.

This beautifully illustrated coffee table edition brings together 124 authentic, traditional recipes that capture the heart of Greek cuisine. More than just a cookbook, it is an invitation into a way of life, where food is not simply nourishment, but a daily ritual rooted in connection, seasonality, and joy.

For the epicurean Greeks, food is synonymous with lifestyle. It reflects the rhythm of the seasons, the generosity of the table, and the simplicity of ingredients treated with respect. This comprehensive anthology showcases classic dishes lovingly adapted for the modern Australian kitchen, making them both accessible and practical without compromising authenticity. Among them, you’ll find a thoughtful selection of vegan recipes, alongside wholesome favourites that celebrate vegetables, legumes, grains, and, of course, exceptional olive oil.

Each recipe honours the essence of Mediterranean cooking unprocessed, unpretentious, and deeply satisfying. These are meals designed not only to nourish the body, but to uplift the mind and soul; dishes meant to be shared, savoured, and passed down through generations.

Whether you are a devoted lover of Greek cuisine or simply seeking the healthful benefits of the Mediterranean diet, this collection is your ultimate guide to time-honoured flavours and traditions.

About the Author

Rena Mihalopoulos is a Melbourne-born cook and writer devoted to celebrating Greek heritage through food. The daughter of Greek migrants who arrived in Australia in the early 1960s, she grew up between two worlds speaking English at school while being immersed in the flavours, rituals, and generosity of the Greek kitchen at home.

With over forty years of experience cooking the dishes of her upbringing, Rena has carefully curated a collection of time-honoured recipes, thoughtfully translated into English and adapted for the modern Australian kitchen. Her work is designed for home cooks seeking authentic flavour without complexity, with a focus on seasonal produce, quality olive oil, and the quiet beauty of simple, honest meals.

Rena’s approach honours tradition while welcoming a new generation into the Mediterranean way of eating, unprocessed, shared, and deeply connected to family, community, and celebration. Through her recipes, she invites readers to cook with confidence, gather with purpose, and carry these flavours forward.

“I’m drawn to the freshness of gently seasoned Greek food—simple, confident cooking that lets the ingredients speak. Guided by the wisdom of Epicurus and Hippocrates, it embraces moderation, balance, and mindful eating.”
