Book- Old Vintage Melbourne: A Culinary Chronicle By Chris Macheras
Old Vintage Melbourne: A Culinary Chronicle
A nostalgic celebration of the restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs and markets that helped shape Melbourne.
From Chris Macheras, the creator of the hugely popular Old Vintage Melbourne, comes a beautiful journey through the places that have defined Melbourne’s food and dining culture across generations.
Old Vintage Melbourne: A Culinary Chronicle brings together the stories of around 120 of Melbourne’s most memorable culinary institutions, from celebrated restaurants that continue to welcome diners today to much-loved establishments that have disappeared but remain firmly etched in the memories of Melburnians.
Through original research, historic photography and contributions from the venues and families themselves, Macheras captures much more than what was served on the plate. These are stories of migration, family businesses, neighbourhoods, changing tastes and the places where generations of Melburnians met, celebrated, ate and drank.
The book travels through Melbourne’s wonderfully diverse culinary landscape from the city’s early coffee palaces and grand dining rooms to Carlton’s Italian pizzerias, Chinatown banquets, Fitzroy pubs and the Greek cake shops of Oakleigh.
Melbourne’s Greek community forms an important part of that story. Greek families brought with them not only food, but a culture of hospitality, gathering and sharing that became woven into Melbourne life. The cafés, cake shops, restaurants and food businesses established by migrant families helped transform entire neighbourhoods and contributed to the incredible multicultural food city Melbourne is today.
Among the institutions featured are enduring Melbourne names including Stalactites, Nikkos Cakes, Jim’s Greek Taverna. Grossi Florentino, Pellegrini’s and France-Soir, alongside places that have since closed their doors but remain part of Melbourne folklore, including Cafe Scheherazade, Coles Cafeteria and Dine-In Pizza Hut.
Every entry combines Chris Macheras’s carefully researched historical writing with photographs filled with nostalgia, old shopfronts, dining rooms, menus, signage and moments from a Melbourne that many will instantly remember.
It is the kind of book you can open on any page and suddenly find yourself transported back in time.
A wonderful addition to the coffee table and a beautiful gift for Melburnians, food lovers, history lovers and anyone fascinated by the migrant families and businesses that helped build Melbourne’s extraordinary culinary identity.
