Tuber Magnatum Pico is the most sought after and rare subterranean mushroom; the most expensive of all truffles. It ranks equal to the food categories of saffron and caviar.
It is harvested in autumn, from September to December, several centimetres below the surface of the ground, and is mainly found growing on the root systems of trees such as oak, hazel, poplar and beech.
Its size can reach up to 12cm in diameter, although it is usually much smaller. Its outer surface is beige or light brown in colour, with white streaks on the inside, and it has an irregular shape.
