Domaine Dalamara Naoussa Xinomavro

An exceptional expression of the noble Xinomavro grape, reflecting both the winery’s dedication to organic and biodynamic viticulture and the distinctive terroir of the Naoussa region in northern Greece. Crafted by sixth-generation winemaker Kostis Dalamara, this wine balances tradition and innovation, offering a pure and elegant interpretation of Naoussa’s most celebrated variety.

Vintage Overview

The 2021 vintage in Naoussa is considered outstanding, marked by favourable growing conditions that allowed for excellent ripening and balance. Wines from this year are noted for their vibrant fruit expression, freshness, and finesse, while still carrying the structure and depth needed for long-term aging. The 2021 Naoussa reflects this harmony perfectly: it opens with inviting aromas of fresh strawberry and sun-dried tomato, lifted by cranberry brightness and subtle layers of spice and earth. Its backbone is defined by the firm, fine-grained tannins that are characteristic of Xinomavro, promising both immediate drinkability and longevity.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, the wine shows a luminous ruby-red hue with clarity and vibrancy. The bouquet is layered, offering notes of red cherry, strawberry compote, tomato leaf, and dried herbs, accented by hints of rose petals and warm spice. On the palate, it reveals a transparent, cherry-driven core, enriched with flavors of raspberry, cranberry, and savory undertones of olive tapenade and dried thyme. The tannins, while firm, are well-integrated and polished, supporting the wine’s medium body and giving it remarkable balance, freshness, and complexity. The finish is long, elegant, and subtly earthy, leaving a lingering impression of red fruit and spice.

Style: Structured, elegant, and authentic,  Dry Red Wine

Pairing: A versatile food wine, pairing beautifully with roast lamb, braised meats, mushroom risotto, stuffed peppers, or aged cheeses. Its brightness also makes it a natural match for Mediterranean dishes like roasted eggplant, tomato-based stews, or mezze platters.

Aging Potential:

While the 2021 Naoussa is enjoyable in its youth, it also has the capacity to evolve gracefully over the next decade. Cellaring this wine will allow for the development of additional complexity and depth.

About the Winery

Domaine Dalamara is a historic, family-owned winery situated at the entrance of Naoussa in northern Greece’s Central region. Established in 1840 by Ioannis Georgiou Dalamara, the estate has been integral to the region’s viticultural heritage for over 180 years, producing wines that reflect both tradition and innovation. Today, it is led by sixth-generation winemaker Kostis Dalamara, who carries forward the family legacy while infusing it with international expertise gained from Burgundy, Alsace, and Catalonia. His vision balances respect for heritage with a modern approach that continues to place the estate among the most respected in Naoussa.

Vineyard and Winemaking Practices

The estate’s vineyards span approximately 6 hectares on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermio, a location prized for its altitude, cool breezes, and rich soils that create ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The Dalamara family has cultivated their vines organically since 1996 and has incorporated biodynamic practices since 2008, treating the land as a living ecosystem.

The primary grape is Xinomavro, Naoussa’s noble variety, celebrated for its high acidity, firm tannins, and remarkable ability to age. From this grape, the winery crafts wines that are both powerful and elegant, often compared to the Nebbiolos of Piedmont. Kostis employs a philosophy of minimal intervention: fermentations with native yeasts, gentle extraction, and no fining or filtration. His judicious use of oak ensures that the wines remain authentic expressions of terroir, bringing out the complexity and depth of Naoussa’s soils and climate.
