Melbourne, a vibrant city renowned for its rich tapestry of nationalities, cultures, and an enduring passion for coffee, serves as the perfect backdrop for a remarkable coffee journey. Inspired by this dynamic city, husband and wife duo George and Thalia have brought to life Melvourni Organic Coffee—an exceptional blend of tradition and innovation that reflects Melbourne’s multicultural essence.
The Melvourni Story
George and Thalia’s vision for Melvourni Organic Coffee is a tribute to Melbourne's diverse and coffee-loving community. By combining their deep appreciation for coffee with a commitment to ethical sourcing, they’ve created a product that celebrates both tradition and modernity. Sourcing speciality-grade, organic Arabica beans, Melvourni Coffee is crafted to deliver a unique coffee experience right in your home.
From Bean to Brew: The Melvourni Difference
Melvourni Coffee begins with the finest organic Arabica beans, ethically sourced from trusted growers. These beans are then locally roasted and ground in Melbourne, ensuring freshness and quality in every batch. The result is a range of coffee products that offer a unique twist on traditional favourites:

- Freddo Coffee: Inspired by Melbourne’s love for innovative coffee styles, Melvourni’s Freddo Coffee offers a refreshing take on the classic Greek iced coffee. Ideal for those hot days or moments when you crave a chilled coffee experience.
- Frappe Coffee: Embrace the ultimate summer treat with Melvourni’s Frappe Coffee. This frothy, chilled coffee is perfect for cooling off on a hot day, blending rich coffee flavour with a creamy texture that’s both satisfying and invigorating.

What inspired you to create Melvourni?
It was family that inspired us to start Melvourni as a hobby way back in 2016. We had just welcomed our first child. A new baby meant lots of visitors - and lots of Greek coffee!
It was then we realised there was a gap in the market. We couldn't find a Greek coffee to serve friends and family that was equivalent to the high quality of espresso coffee that we were used to in the Melbourne coffee scene. So, we started the process of finding specialty-grade, ethically sourced, organic coffee beans from the best regions around the world. We then locally roasted these beans to our specifications to develop a Greek coffee.
We officially launched the business with our Greek coffee in 2022. Eventually we decided to produce all of the iconic coffees of Greece - by developing a Frappe coffee and a Freddo coffee – and using the same bean qualities we sought for our Greek coffee.
Can you share the story behind Melvourni’s connection to both Melbourne and Greek coffee culture?
We chose the name “Melvourni” for our coffee brand as it means “Melbourne” in Greek. This beautiful city is built on a fusion of cultures and an intense love of coffee. We wanted to honour that, as well as the Greek culture which thrives in this city and throughout the generations of our family – while also being a twist on tradition! Our brand is truly Melbourne and uniquely Melvourni.
What’s your favourite Melvourni coffee?
Thalia loves our Classic Greek coffee. George can be found with our Classic Freddo espresso in his hand every morning and a Frappe in the afternoon.
What are your favourite Greek meals to cook at home?
Bamies and fasoulakia. We eat a lot of quick, easy prep meals during the week, so we try to balance this out with slow cooked vegetarian (i.e.,“ladera”) Greek dishes on the weekend.
Is there a particular Greek dish that inspires or complements the flavours of Melvourni coffee?
Our Greek coffee and Frappe coffee come in a variety of flavours - such as tsoureki, hot cross bun and cinnamon - so you don’t need to eat a dessert! That said, our coffee is a perfect accompaniment to loukoumades and many chefs have been using our coffee in tiramisu and espresso martinis.
If we looked in your pantry right now, what Greek food staples would we find?
Loads of various olive oil, Cretan barley rusks, rissoni (“kritharaki”), lentils, chickpeas and a range of beans.
You have a love for quality ingredients, what is one of your favourite products from The Greek Providore?
One of the first items we purchased was the vanilla fondant - submarine from Bariamis Family. We used it on our Halloween ghost reel on Instagram last year
When you need to unwind, what are your favourite chilled holiday destinations in Greece?
We're both Greek-Australians. Thalia moved here when she was quite young and has kept a strong connection with her roots in Siatista Kozani (near Thessaloniki), while George's family hails from Mytilini on the island Lesvos. We also have a fond spot for Crete where we frequently holiday as a family.
Is there a place in Greece that you think is underrated and deserves more attention?
Kastoria is an incredible and underrated place. It gives mini-Lake Como vibes.
How do you like to enjoy your coffee when you’re on holiday? Any special rituals or favourite spots?
We BYO Melvourni coffee everywhere. In Crete, we give our range of coffee to the local beach bar café near our apartment and ask that they make our drinks with these. You can really taste the difference, and we just can’t go back to anything else without it feeling like its ruining the holiday.
So, what’s next?
Look out for new coffee flavours this Holiday season – with an extra special limited edition to help bring in the New Year!!
